S. African children create portrait of Mandela, call for end to hunger

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa: Around 2,000 high school students from an impoverished area of Johannesburg lined up Tuesday to create an unusual birthday card for former President Nelson Mandela, who turns 90 this week.
While reporters watched from a doorless helicopter above, the students took their places on a cricket field to form an outline of a fist-wielding Mandela, an image associated with his release from prison. They also spelled out “Freedom from Hunger.”
ActionAid, the international nonprofit group that organized the event, hoped aerial photos of the image would both celebrate Mandela’s birthday and inspire leaders to fight world hunger. Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and anti-apartheid leader, turns 90 on July 18.
